Anabolic Steroids are man-made drugs that are like the male hormone testosterone, which which occurs naturally in men’s bodies.
Anabolic Steroids can be used for medical treatment and can come in tablet or liquid form.
How is it used?
They can be taken orally or injected.
Effects
- Users claim the drug makes them feel more aggressive, competitive and able to train harder.
- If it is used with excise and a high protein diet it can help to build bodyweight and increase muscle size.
- It helps users to recover from strenuous exercise.
Risks
- It can stop young people growing properly.
- Risks for men include erection problems, breast growth, shrinking testicles, sterility, acne, increased chance of liver failure and heart attack.
- Risks for women include growth of facial hair, deepening voice, shrinking breasts, possible miscarriage and stillbirth.
- Sharing injection equipment equipment puts the users at risk of infections like Hepatitis B or C and HIV/ Aids.
- Injecting can cause damage to veins leading to abcesses and thrombosis.

- Class C drug.
- Anabolic Steroids are prescription only drugs.
- The Government has recently changed the law to increase the penalties for supplying steroids but possession for personal use is still not an offence.
- It is an offence to possess imitation steroids. The police will arrest anyone for steroids if they can prove that they are counterfeit.
- Class C penalties may apply even if you give someone the drugs and don't ask for money in return.
