What is it?

Mushrooms are a fungus. There are five mushrooms that can be used for a hallucinogenic effect, these are classed as Magic Mushrooms.

The most popular are the liberty cap and the fly argaric which grows in the UK. They contain psilocybin which causes the hallucination.

How is it used?

Magic Mushrooms are usually eaten (raw, dried or cooked), or taken as a drink.

Effects

  • Similar to LSD but it does vary in potency and strength. It can also depend on how it is prepared.
  • Effects generally take about 30 minutes and last for up to 4 to 9 hours (peaking at about 3 hours) depending on dose.
  • Visual distortions of colour and movement. Users can experience an increase in heart rate, blood pressure and pupil size.
  • Physical effects can include feelings of sickness, vomiting and stomach pains.
  • It can cause anxiety and fear, especially if the user is anxious or unhappy to start with.

Risks

  • Distinguishing hallucinogenic mushrooms from their poisons and sometimes deadly relatives requires complex knowledge and skill.
  • It can cause unpredictable effects especially if mixed with other substances such as cannabis or alcohol .
  • Tolerance develops quickly after regular use, requiring higher doses to maintain the effect.
  • Psychological dependence is a possibility.

The law

  • Class A drug (whatever form they take).
  • If found in possession of Magic Mushrooms the maximum penalty is 7 years in prison and/or unlimited fine.
  • Supply carries a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison and/or an unlimited fine.
  • The law relating to hallucinogenic mushrooms is complex depending upon which type are used.
  • The law relating to two specific substances pscilocin and psciolocybin both of which are classified as Class A, only when something has done to them such as boiling, drying or crushing. Whilst contained within the mushrooms it is not an offence to posses them.

Only available during certain periods of the year due to limited growing season.

Availability of substance which claim to be magic mushrooms are common but often contain no psychoactive substance.
